There is Jeff Mills and then there is every other techno DJ. He is rightly considered the most brilliant DJ and producer of techno in the World, truly in a class of his own. He started as The Wizard, with guest slots on the Electrifying Mojo's radio show in Detroit before moving on to other stations. He then went on to co-found Underground Resistance in Detroit with Mad Mike Banks. Soon after, he moved to Chicago and founded Axis records before moving to New York to be the resident DJ at the infamous Limelight club. Jeff's influence on techno as both a producer and a DJ cannot be understated. Unlike many other Detroit techno legends, Mills has remained incredibly busy, and continues to release timeless music to this day. After many years of trying to make it happen, we are thrilled to welcome this living legend to The Bunker.
Dasha Rush is Russian born, but actually she is a citizen of the world, maybe by chance. She likes to combine music with other elements to push the boundaries to the limit, searching for the experimentation. In her strange and twisted world the machines are the protagonists of a neo-romanticism, weaved with human dreams. Dasha runs her label Fullpanda Records, the sub label Hunger To Create.
Now making music as considered and carefully crafted as his DJ sets, Eric Cloutier has long been an influential selector. Though he recently started releasing his own music, it’s fair to say that Eric Cloutier has established himself as an influential underground figure purely off the back of his DJ sets. Known to be able to tease and control crowds for extended periods of time without resorting to cheap thrills or lowest common denominator kicks, since first emerging in 1996 he has been installed as resident at some of the most knowing venues around the world, and for good reason.
These include local hotspots in his native Detroit, internationally acclaimed clubs in his current hometown of Berlin but also mythologised places like The Bunker in New York. In terms of festivals, only the finest will do, and as such Cloutier is one of the select few who gets invited to play the culturally considered affair that is Japan’s Labyrinth.
“I like to keep it really body-oriented,” says the man of his inimitable DJ style. “I like to focus on hypnotising people in to a deep groove and just locking them in.” House, dub and techno are all fair game for Cloutier, and be they deep and driving tracks or harder hitting selections, every one bridges the gap between the old and the new in seamless and unpredictable ways.
2014 finds the high quality DJ further focussing on making and releasing music. As such and as well as being involved with The Bunker New York label and already established TANSTAFAAL imprint, his first productions and remixes have been snapped up by Studio-R, Freund Der Familie and Steve O'Sullivan’s influential Mosaic. Given that he is such an acclaimed and informed DJ, it’s no wonder Cloutier’s deep, airy and atmospheric music is turning out to be just as essential for those who know.
DJ Godfather is considered one of the founding fathers of the genre we now know as Ghetto Tech. He has been DJing since the age of 15 and got his first records out at 18 years old. Taking his turntablism skills and mixing Detroit Techno music with Miami Bass music, and new sound was born, Ghetto Tech. With the formation of their new record label Twilight 76 with partners DJ Dick and Brian Gillespie, he took his talent and turned it into an entire business creating 3 other labels known as Databass Records, D.E.T. Only (An exclusive label with only 1000 copies of each release), and Juke Trax (A label dedicated to the Chicago style of Ghetto House and Juke music). With all 4 record labels combined, Godfather and his partners released over 250 vinyl releases. DJ Godfather remains very active in the Detroit scene, and is basically THEE most popular DJ in the city, holding down various residencies and co-owning a nightclub. There was much debate over who to book to headline Big Booty Hoes this year, but at the end we wanted the best Ghetto Tech DJ in the world, and there is no question that DJ Godfather is the man for the job.
Mike Servito is from a very special yet temporary and partially lost fertile crescent of techno / house / party DJing. It was a time when raves were still a fresh idea, almost felt like a revolution, and DJs like Claude Young, D Wynn, Derrick Carter and Mike Huckaby were informing an upcoming generation. If you look directly to that inspired generation you will find the lost threads of Detroit Techno, House and beyond, you will find a group of DJs with insanely deep mixing skills, the ability to rock almost any kind of party with an improvisational approach that is so skilled it makes everything seem so well thought out that even they don't know where their set will go. But, it will take you there! In the future, this special generation of deep midwest mixers will be remembered and revered as the wizards they are, long after the trendy players have lost their luster.
Detroit never forgot about Mike Servito, his upfront dirty deep and bitchy taste has had an impact on Detroit nightlife for over a decade. From debuting in 1995 at Dat's Poorboy parties, to being a resident at blackbx and Ghostly's Untitled (along with Derek Plaslaiko, Tadd Mullinix, Matthew Dear, and Ryan Elliott), contributing to the bizarrely popular, wild and free Dorkwave, and progressing that concept into Sass (the hippest queer party in Detroit at the time), to blowing minds at Interdimensional Transmissions' No Way Back parties, Servito has made his impression. Moving to Brooklyn, Detroit's loss has been their gain, as he has found a proper home with a new residency at the Bunker, and worldwide representation from Beyond Booking.
Our old friend Scott Mou of Other Music, a New York DJ, visual artist, and musician, debuted his long-running solo project Queens with first album End Times on Dial Records last year. Tonight he treats us to a deep chilled out set in Stilton House.
Nihal Ramchandani is a regular at The Bunker who has joined us a few times behind the decks and blown the room apart every time. Tonight he will be starting the night off right with some a deep and meditative set early on in Stilton House.
Well, they're all special, but tonight should be EXTRA special. After many years of trying, we've finally booked one of our all time favorite artists, Jeff Mills. With Eric Cloutier and Dasha Rush setting the stage for him, things should get downright cosmic in Output. In the Panther Room we are celebrating the birthdays of both Gratia, Atomly, AND Petey with the fourth edition of Big Booty Hoes, where you will hear a mix of ghettotech, booty house, acid, jack trax, electro and Miami bass, headlined by the one and only DJ Godfather. When you inevitably need a breather, head to the Stilton House, where Nihal Ramchandani and Queens will be laying down the chill vibes.
