Atop an effervescent 303 that squelches and squirms its way across a deceptively funky but simple house beat, the seductive voice of Maxime Robillard aka Love Letters casts its corporeal spell. Repeating the titular phrase, “I call upon the body,” the NY-based artist and producer makes their latest offering on The Bunker New York. Featuring an acapella, instrumental and a pair of cross-generational remixes, the I Call Upon… EP harks back to New York’s old school dance music scene in the 80s, when beat-a-pellas and isolated vocal tracks offered DJs a world of possibilities. Described in his own words as a “punky acid track,” “I Call Upon…” includes a hypnotic vocal hymn that centers on the liberation of the body through dance and the raw unfettered expression of one’s sexuality. Rounded out by a drum machine workout from The Bunker’s long term resident DJ Mike Servito and a bit of breakneck funk by way of New York rising star, WTCHCRFT, I Call Upon… beckons the listener to drop down into their bodies and get physical. As he says in the opening verse, “This isn’t for your mind.”
