One of the most highly respected acts in both techno and industrial circles, Orphx have been developing their signature fusion of hypnotic rhythms and experimental noise for over twenty years. Using modular and analog synthesizers, software, location recordings and feedback circuits, Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey draw upon the darker, psychedelic fringes of techno and electro, and combine these elements with the experimental aesthetics and themes of early industrial music.
Orphx gained an international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European ‘rhythmic noise’ scene and more recently came to the attention of techno fans through a series of acclaimed 12"s on Adam X’s Sonic Groove label, along with standout remixes for artists like Perc, Oscar Mulero and Svreca.
Oddie and Sealey have performed throughout Europe and North America at celebrated venues like Berghain and Tresor as well as notable electronic music festivals such as Movement and Mutek. Their live appearances are renowned for delivering improvised performances that combine software with modular synthesizer and other hardware.
Orphx have released nine full length albums and numerous singles on vinyl, CD and cassette that have had a significant influence on many artists in the present wave of industrial techno. Building on a sprawling back catalogue that stretches across the divisions between industrial, ambient and techno, their recent output has demonstrated that Orphx are both pioneers and innovators in the fusion of rhythm and noise.
There's something about the fearsome crunch of Ancient Methods' sounds that defies dry technical description and demands that you go over the top, whether in talking about it or moving to it. Which isn't to say he makes headbanging music - the "funk" part of his pitch black techno war funk is as important as anything, and hia tracks have a good healthy dose of bump'n'grind running through them, even if that grinding is as much angle-grinder as bogling. The raw edges, thick-layered sound and general old-school soundsystem-in-an-industrial-building kick has leapt out amidst the minimal orthodoxy, creating a massive buzz over a few beautifully marbled pieces of vinyl with medieval etchings on the labels, and prompting suggestions of a new industrial forward movement in the techno scene.
Løt.te is Mehmet Irdel, a Turkish-born artist who has been a friend of The Bunker for a long time. He’s currently based in Brooklyn, where he co-runs Rote Productions, a company that releases music, graphic works, video compositions, and photography, and takes a strong stance against the concept of intellectual property.
Irdel’s early work consisted of soundscapes, noise, and power electronics. Now, he’s trying his hand at techno, with incredible results. The music of Løt.te is far more intricate than the looser, darker work he’s known for under Rote Productions. The Løt.te project favors a more natural, analog feel; Irdel was disillusioned with the recognizably digital sound of computers and software that’s so prevalent in current electronic music.
Irdel is also a prolific visual artist and designer, in addition to his work as a producer; he creates most of the graphic design and artwork for Rote Productions, and his art inspires his music.
Antenes is one of a few projects that Lori Napoleon is behind. Aside from hand building synths to perform her own music as Meridian7, she has also released a track on L.I.E.S. as Antenes, and has more material in the works. She's also working on a release under a different name for The Bunker New York, which will hopefully be out in 2015. Tonight she warms things up with an opening DJ set.
As The Bunker continues to grow significantly, many of you have expressed a desire to turn back the clock to the good ol' days when the party was weekly at subTonic for 100 people or so. We miss those days as well, so in 2011 we launched a new series of events called The Bunker Limited. For The Bunker Limited, we bring a ridiculous sound system into a very small space, and limit attendance to 150. Last year we said goodbye to Public Assembly and the small loft space above it that housed The Bunker Limited. In 2014 we relaunch The Bunker Limited in a new art space we could not be more excited to be a part of, Trans Pecos. There will be no guestlist for The Bunker Limited, the only way we can pull this off in a space this small is if everyone pays. The sets at these events are not recorded, and absolutely no photography is allowed inside.
We are very pleased to announce Orphx's first appearance in New York in over a decade, alongside Ancient Methods' first gig here ever. Local support comes from The Bunker New York's Løt.te and Lori Napoleon aka Antenes.
