After co-presenting 12 editions of No Way Back in Detroit, and 10 editions in Brooklyn, in 2016 The Bunker and Interdimensional Transmissions started a new tradition of throwing The Bunker on Memorial Day at Tangent gallery. The Bunker is an ongoing night of musical exploration, constantly evolving since it started in the tiny basement of (sub)Tonic in January of 2003, growing into an international music institution. The Bunker will once again be the last 8 of 32 hours of continuous music that starts with No Way Back at Return to the Source at Tangent Gallery. As usual, we’re embracing the concept of collaboration by featuring a series of specially curated DJ pairings for this Monday night wind down.
Years ago, we named The Dance Room after Mike Huckaby’s infamous greeting whenever he picked up the phone at Record Time, and the name will stay in honor of our fallen hero and brother. This stage has become known for presenting sets that are really pushing at the limits of where electronic music is at each year, and 2024 will be no different.
Opening the room we have a completely unprecedented set from The Hague’s Intergalactic Gary, who was the star of the first I.T. presents The Bunker event back in 2016, and No Way Back resident Outer Space room closer Scott Zacharias. We honestly have no idea what that is going to sound like, but cannot wait to find out! Next we have an absolute drumnbass legend from the UK, dBridge, collaborating with I.T.’s Erika, who has really turned heads and actively shocked some people with her unbelievably mental dnb sets in recent years. Closing the night a wormhole will surely be opened when Japan’s Wata Igarashi, who has released multiple EPs on The Bunker New York and appeared at our parties regularly for many years, plays for the first time with long time Bunker friend and Merge resident Clarisa Kimskii.
The front room of Tangent will once again be transformed into the Going In room. Going In is a sub-label of The Bunker New York, dedicated to long-form musical compositions geared towards healing, meditation, plant medicine ceremonies, psychedelic therapy, yoga, or simply spacing out and going inside yourself. This room is intended as a space to relax and integrate a heavy weekend as we slowly land the spaceship that is Return to the Source. There will be plenty of seating and the amazing sound system RTTS is known for, so sprawl out with your friends and take it easy.
Opening the room is Philadelphia’s Phil Yeah, who has released on Going In and Full Spectrum, collaborating with The Bunker and Going In’s founder Bryan Kasenic. Next we have another Going In artist, Jo Johnson, who at this point is inarguably one of the world’s top ambient artists, playing for the first time ever with frequent Bunker and I.T. collaborator John Elliott aka Imaginary Softwoods of Emeralds, Organic Dial, Outer Space, and many more. It’s likely this will turn into a hybrid live and DJ set from these two absolute icons, and we really could not be any more excited about this set! As if that wasn’t enough, the room will be closed by Rrose and Antenes. These two friends have been working on some projects together for quite some time, and this will be the first time they play together at an event.
After the massive success and palpably electric vibe of the third stage at last year’s event, there was simply no way we couldn’t bring it back. The Garden Stage, in the outdoor area, will feature collaborative sets from familiar faces both old and new from The Bunker universe. This stage starts immediately following Lot Mass at 10pm.
Opening the stage will be two DJs who we feel firmly represent the sound and ethos of The Bunker from the perspective of a new generation: Kiernan Laveaux and Livwutang. We’ve been fully gagged any time we’ve heard either one of them play over the past few years, and know that whatever they do is going to ignite this stage! Taking over from there is T4T’s Octo Octa going back to back with Detroit’s rising star Father Dukes, another first time collab that is sure to pop off. Closing the stage we have a set that got our whole team so excited when it was first mentioned that we were squealing: Mike Servito x Jeffrey Sfire. These two have been friends forever and have somehow only played b2b once before. Who knows what they are going to pull out of each other, but it will undoubtedly be super special.
Return to the Source 2024 is an organic evolution of the original concept, with careful attention to detail put in at every level. We’ve used this time to improve ourselves and our infrastructure, to mindfully choose what it is we want to do and share with our community. Our weekend at the Tangent includes 4 parties for the price of one weekend wristband, with an outdoor area containing a harm reduction zone, food truck, and a greater outdoor sound system. Once the music starts at No Way Back on Sunday night, it won't end until Tuesday morning — 32 hours of continuous music. A weekend wristband will allow you to experience all this with no interruptions.
